UN Aviation Chief Urges Global Action To Protect Flights From Military Threats
The head of the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has called for immediate global action to safeguard commercial aircraft from rising military threats, including missiles, drones, and GPS jamming.
In a statement, ICAO Secretary-General Juan Carlos Salazar warned that civilian flights are facing unprecedented risks in conflict zones, with multiple incidents of attacks on passenger planes in recent months. He emphasized that civil aviation must remain neutral and protected under international law, and urged all nations to cooperate in creating no-risk zones for air travel.
The warning comes amid a sharp increase in airspace violations and attacks on civilian aircraft, particularly in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. ICAO is now working with governments and airlines to develop new safety protocols and real-time threat-sharing systems to prevent tragedies.
