Energy Storage Overtakes Solar in China’s Overseas Renewable Project Volume

A striking structural shift has appeared in China's overseas clean energy business. In Q2 of 2026, the number of China-backed energy storage projects abroad surpassed solar photovoltaic projects for the first time, with a year-on-year growth of 75%.

This marks a critical transition: Chinese green energy players are moving from simply exporting solar panels and wind turbines to delivering integrated "source-grid-load-storage" solutions. Many overseas clients no longer only buy single equipment. They need full packages including power generation, battery storage, grid scheduling and after-sale operation services. Southeast Asia, the Middle East and South Africa are the core target markets. Energy storage solves the biggest weakness of wind and solar - power output volatility, making renewable power reliable enough for factories and commercial users.
