Viral Kitchen Gadget Chaos: Dutch Consumers Rush To Buy AI Soup Stirrer, Stores Run Out Within 72 Hours
A small countertop automatic stirring device has unexpectedly gone viral across the Netherlands, sparking a nationwide shopping frenzy and emptying shelves at electronics and home goods retailers.
The gadget, nicknamed "StirMate", is a battery-powered rotating stirrer designed to sit inside pots and continuously mix soups, sauces and stews. It has simple AI sensors that detect liquid viscosity and adjust rotation speed automatically, so home cooks no longer need to stand by the stove and stir nonstop. It first became popular on Dutch TikTok and Instagram after food bloggers posted funny clips: one video showing the stirrer quietly simmering curry while the owner relaxed on the couch gained more than 12 million views in just four days.
Local retailers told reporters that pre-order stock of the StirMate sold out in merely 72 hours. Many buyers said they were tired of constantly stirring thick sauces and burning food. Some home chefs joked that the small device had "ended the tedious pot-watching chore forever".
However, the sudden boom also brought funny complaints. A flood of social media posts showed users sharing mishaps: the stirrer occasionally slips and bangs against pot walls, or gets tangled with noodles. Some critics commented that it is a "luxury toy instead of a must-have appliance", and many shoppers admitted they bought it just because the viral video looked entertaining.
Industry analysts noted that quirky, small kitchen gadgets with shareable social media moments are seeing explosive demand across Northern Europe. Unlike traditional big home appliances, these compact low-cost items spread rapidly through short video platforms. Suppliers are rushing to ramp up production to refill Dutch inventories, and plan to launch the product in Belgium and Germany next month.
