World’s‑first Ocean‑based Floating Wind Farm Unlocks Record‑breaking Green Power in Deep Atlantic Waters

Europe has switched on the world's largest deep‑water floating offshore wind farm, opening a new chapter in the global race to tap powerful ocean winds and speed up the shift away from fossil fuels.

 

The $2.8‑billion Atlantic Horizon project, located 120 kilometres off Portugal's northern coast, began full commercial power generation this week. With 72 huge turbines sitting on semi‑submersible floating platforms anchored hundreds of metres below the sea surface, the site can produce enough clean electricity to supply more than 600,000 homes across Portugal and southern Spain.

 

Unlike traditional offshore wind farms fixed firmly to the seabed, floating turbines can operate in very deep ocean waters where wind speeds are far higher and more reliable. Until recently, high construction costs and complex marine technology kept deep‑sea wind energy out of reach for most countries.

 

Project chief engineer Elena Costa said years of technical trials finally solved major challenges, including storm‑resistant anchoring systems and remote underwater maintenance robots. "For decades we thought the strongest ocean winds were too far out, too deep to harvest," Costa told reporters at the official launch ceremony. "Today we prove that deep‑water wind is no longer science fiction. It is affordable, scalable energy for millions."

 

Energy analysts say the milestone could completely reshape the global renewable‑energy map. Nations with steep, deep coastal seabeds - including Japan, the United Kingdom, Norway and the west coast of the United States - now have a realistic new pathway to massively expand wind power without competing for limited land space onshore.

 

The International Energy Agency warned, however, that faster international supply‑chain cooperation will be required to bring floating‑wind costs down further. Shipping delays, special‑purpose ship shortages and competition for marine engineers remain key bottlenecks.

 

Portugal's government plans to add three more large floating‑wind sites before 2030, as part of its national goal to run 100 percent of its electricity system from renewable sources. Industry observers expect heavy investment across the Atlantic basin over the next five years, as governments compete to take the lead in this fast‑growing clean‑energy sector.
